Grasscloth is not meant to look machine-perfect. That is its magic.
Natural fibers are harvested, dried, often dyed, and woven before being laminated to a paper backing. Depending on the collection, those fibers may include sisal, jute, hemp, seagrass, raffia, arrowroot or other grasses and plant materials. The weave catches light in a way a flat print cannot, giving walls depth, warmth and subtle movement throughout the day.
Designers repeatedly turn to grasscloth when a room needs texture without another busy pattern. It can make a tailored office feel warmer, a dining room more intimate, a bedroom softer or an entry more memorable. It reads as refined precisely because the hand of the material remains visible.
Why every panel looks a little different
With genuine grasscloth, variations in fiber thickness, weave, color and sheen are expected. Adjacent strips may appear lighter or darker, and horizontal strands will not line up like a printed geometric pattern. This effect is often called paneling or shading. Seams are visible and form part of the finished rhythm of the wall.
Schumacher describes these irregularities as inherent to natural grasscloth rather than defects. A sample shows the color family and construction, but a small swatch cannot predict every variation across full rolls. Order from one dye lot and view several full-width panels when possible.
Why grasscloth costs more
Natural grasscloth is generally more expensive than mass-produced printed paper because its raw fibers require agricultural growing and processing, then weaving, coloring, backing and inspection. Handmade character means slower production and fewer identical square feet. Installation may also cost more because the surface is sensitive to paste, water, pressure and handling, and many rooms require careful planning around panel placement.
Price should be evaluated as a full-project investment: material, freight, overage, wall preparation, adhesive and skilled installation. Always confirm the roll width and sold-by format; a “roll” does not have the same usable coverage across every brand.
Where grasscloth works best
Grasscloth is beautiful in living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, libraries, offices, entries and powder rooms with reliable ventilation. Use caution in full bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens or anywhere exposed to splashing, grease or persistent humidity. Natural fiber absorbs rather than repels; water can stain, distort fibers or weaken the bond.
If you love the look in a demanding space, consider a vinyl or printed faux grasscloth specifically rated for that environment. Faux versions offer more consistent color, easier cleaning and less visible paneling, though they do not reproduce every nuance of real woven fiber.
What installation involves
Grasscloth is one of the strongest arguments for professional wallpaper installation. The installer must check the manufacturer’s instructions, sequence and inspect panels, prepare and prime the wall, use the specified paste, keep hands and the work surface immaculate, and prevent adhesive from reaching the face.
Natural fibers can stain when wet, and paste on the surface may be impossible to remove without leaving a mark. Heavy smoothing or rolling can crush the weave or create polished areas. Some products are straight hung; others call for reverse hanging to balance shading. These instructions are product-specific.
A skilled installer also plans where seams and tonal changes will fall. They cannot remove natural variation, but they can present it thoughtfully and consistently.
Grasscloth care and upkeep
Check the brand’s care instructions first. In general:

Dust with a clean, soft brush or the upholstery attachment of a vacuum on very low suction.

Avoid water, household cleaners and stain removers unless the manufacturer specifically approves them.

Blotting or rubbing may alter the dye or flatten the fiber.

Protect the wall from splashes, oily hands, pets and furniture abrasion.

Maintain normal ventilation and address leaks or condensation immediately.

Use window coverings if intense, direct sunlight could cause uneven fading.
Natural grasscloth develops character with age. It is not the ideal choice for someone who wants a washable, perfectly uniform surface; it is ideal for someone who values organic material, visible craftsmanship and depth.
